Google could be working on a clever new feature for Pixel phones that transforms static photos into animated video wallpapers. Code strings spotted inside a Pixel system app suggest that Android could soon let you transform your favorite pictures into short moving clips using cloud-based AI models.
Leaked code reveals animated wallpaper development
An Android Authority tear-down of the Custom Icons system app version 2026.07.09.978 revealed references to a project codenamed “catsmile.” Code hidden inside the app points to a tool named “Animated wallpaper” located within the Live Effects menu of the Wallpaper & Style settings. Users running the Android 17 QPR2 beta build can even see early visual previews of where this option will live.
Rather than just creating a 3D depth effect like Pixel’s current Cinematic Wallpapers, this upgrade appears to convert photos into actual short videos. The system seems to borrow technology from the Photo to Video feature found in Google Photos, which relies on Google’s Veo generative AI models to create smooth motion from a single image.
Background processing and daily creation limits
Generating AI videos requires heavy computational power. So, the feature processes animations in the background. Code strings show that users will receive a system notification while their new wallpaper renders. The process also requires an active internet connection, sending the image to Google servers for rendering.
To manage server load, Google looks to be setting daily limits on how many animated wallpapers you can create. The code includes a standard user consent prompt covering Google’s AI Prohibited Use Policy and Terms of Service, along with a feedback system where users can rate generated clips or report visual glitches.
When to expect the feature on Pixel devices
Google has not officially announced “catsmile” or confirmed when it might launch for the public. Since the feature remains in early development within preview software, Google could still tweak how it works or scrap it entirely before release. Still, bringing AI video generation directly to the Android lock screen would give Pixel owners a fun, personalized way to bring their photo libraries to life.
