
TikTok is launching a new paid subscription that’ll show no ads. This will cost users £3.99 (~$5.44) per month. This, as per TikTok, is giving its community a choice over how they experience ads on the platform. The new offering, TikTok Ad-Free, will roll out over the coming months to accounts aged 18 or over.
TikTok launches an ad-free paid subscription for its users in the UK
TikTok users subscribing to the ad-free tier will not see ads across the app, including the ‘For You’ feed. However, they should still see sponsored/paid content posted by creators. Additionally, the company won’t use the data of the users who opt for the paid subscription for advertising purposes. For those who choose not to subscribe, they can continue to use TikTok as they have been, with personalized ads. Regardless of the subscription, the core TikTok experience, as per the company, won’t change.
In its official blog update, TikTok says that by maintaining an ad-supported version alongside the new subscription, the company helps UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reach the right audience.
“Choice for our community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on TikTok. Advertising on our platform is already helping thousands of British businesses reach new customers, increase sales, and create jobs, while our new ad-free option gives people greater control over their experience,” said Kris Boger, TikTok’s UK Managing Director.
The core TikTok experience won’t change.
This finally comes after the company tested an ad-free monthly subscription in some regions in 2023. The launch may be coming from the UK’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which prohibits companies from collecting users’ personal data for advertising without their consent.
Either way, with this new ad-free paid plan, TikTok joins a handful of other companies that ask users to pay if they don’t like to see ads. Currently, it’s not clear if the company will bring this to the US.
