
Most of us know that heat is typically viewed as the killer of batteries. But did you know that extreme cold can have a detrimental effect on your battery as well? Well, that might soon be a problem of the past, thanks to next generation battery architecture from a company called Addionics.
Addionics unveils its next generation battery architecture
In case you’re not too familiar, extreme cold can have a negative effect on batteries. This is because low temperatures cause the ions between the anode and cathode to move slower, making it harder to deliver electricity. It also causes higher resistance, thus reducing the overall efficiency.
To solve this problem, Addionics claims to have developed next generation battery architecture. This comes in the form of a new 3D porous current collector. This basically revamps and rethinks the way current travels through a battery. Think of it like a sponge full of holes, which allows the charged ions to travel via more direct pathways. This will result in improved flow and reduced resistance.
The company says, “The porous structure allows electrolyte and lithium ions to move through the current collector plane, creating additional access pathways throughout the electrode. This reduces effective transport distances, improves active-material accessibility, and distributes electrochemical activity across a larger volume. By improving how ions, electrons, and electrochemical reactions are moving inside the cell, the technology enables batteries to retain more of their intended performance when temperatures decrease.”
Other potential benefits
Now, having a battery that works in extreme cold is a good thing to have. We’re talking about our phones, tablets, computers, and let’s not forget electric cars. But in addition to being able to better withstand the cold, Addionics’ tech could have other potential benefits. This includes faster charging.
Like we said earlier, the company’s new battery architecture is like a sponge that offers more direct pathways for charged ions to travel. This in turn opens up more “lanes” which will make charging faster, which is great news for everyone since a lot of our gadgets these days are battery-powered.
As it stands, Addionics envisions its tech used in electric cars, trucks, drones, and so on. However, when asked by PhoneArena if there was potential for it to be scaled down and fitted into smartphones, the company said yes. But maybe don’t get too excited yet. It’s worth noting whether or not we’ll see this tech commercialized.
