The PS5 reportedly has a new jailbreak app called Overdrive that makes it possible to download full games and DLC at no cost. It goes without saying that jailbreaking your console goes against Sony’s terms of service and will result in Sony locking down that PlayStation console if players who engage in such activity are discovered. That being said, players aren’t happy with Sony at the moment due to many decisions the company has made over the past few years. Such as cancelling Destiny 2 live service, before finally announcing months later that the franchise would continue in the future, and announcing the end of physical games in 2028. Not to mention Sony’s closure of some of its acquired studios the past several years.
All of this is to say that there are some players who would happily go through the jailbreak process on their PS5 to get access to the Overdrive app, if it meant sticking it to a company that they’re mad at. The problem with that is what the app allows. And that’s not something that Sony will take likely.
The jailbreak app ‘Overdrive’ is a digital storefront for PS5 where games are free
There’s no doubt Sony has already gotten wind of this software, as it’s now been shared on social media and has garnered plenty of attention from gamers wanting to stick it to Sony. Originally shared by a user named Edigax on X, the jailbreak app Overdrive can be seen in action, displaying the app as a digital storefront for PS5 games with one major difference. There are no prices.
Instead, the app shows the size of game files, with a very, very large list of available games to download. This includes heavy hitters and newer titles like Ghost of Yotei, Battlefield 6, Forza Horizon 6, Black Myth: Wukong, 007: First Light, and many others. None of the games are actually launched on video, as one commenter in the thread points out. So it’s not made clear whether or not any of the games will actually run.
