Patent documentation was recently published by the USPTO for a revolutionary new Ferrari engine showcasing oval- or pill-shaped pistons instead of traditional circular ones. It’s a novel concept that could provide immense packaging benefits that could prolong the life of the V12 engine in models like the 12Cilindri, but while it seems like something state-of-the-art and unheard of, Ferrari was beaten to the punch by Honda decades ago… sort of. That’s because Honda once created a motorcycle engine with similar pill-shaped pistons for racing purposes but did so in a very different fashion, resulting in one of the most unique engines ever built.
