Ask most people to imagine the symbols of the late 1960s counterculture, and a few recurrent images will come up: guitars, flower power, bell-bottom jeans, and the Volkswagen Bus, also referred to as the Transporter, the Type 2, or the Microbus. This one-of-a-kind vehicle was favored by musical artists and protest groups alike; it found a place as the automotive symbol of hippie culture, evoking images of cross-country road trips and youthful freedom. It’s now back in the US in the shape of the all-electric ID. Buzz, with VW returning with an authentic product, and not repeating the failure of the badge-engineered Chrysler Town & Country that was sold here as the VW Routan in the early 2010s.
