If you’re still using a Pixel 6 or a Pixel 6 Pro, then the time has come for the final software update (in beta form) to land on your device, as Google has announced the arrival of Android 17 QPR1 beta 9, which is the final update for both of those devices.
The pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are a little long in the tooth now, and they’ve reached their end of life for software support according to Google’s older software update standards. Google didn’t change its update policy until the release of the Pixel 8, when it started supporting phones for OS upgrades, feature drops, and security updates for a total of 7 years. This commitment to longer update life cycles pushed Samsung to offer the same thing for most of its devices.
Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners can exit the beta program with the stable update this Fall
As mentioned by Google’s Mishaal Rahman, Google is pushing out the Android 17 QPR1 Beta 9 update starting on August 17. He also states that with this beta update being the final one for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners, they can officially exit the beta program after the stable software is pushed out in September since they won’t get any more.
As for changes in this update, there’s a handful of fixes available in the software. Notably, if you invoked Circle to Search it could cause a failure to switch between apps by swiping on the bottom gesture bar. This has now been fixed, Rahman states.
Another fix tackled the issue where devices could enter a reboot loop every 20 to 30 seconds. Additionally, Google says there are fixes for unexpected loud noises playing during media playback and notification interactions, and there’s a fix for disappearing taskbar icons when launching apps.
