Prior to 2015’s Dieselgate scandal, Audi was the pioneering power behind all things diesel, an incontrovertible truth that was helped in no small part by the learnings gleaned following 8 Le Mans victories by its oil-burning prototypes. It even built a V12 diesel, which was supposed to go into the R8, but ended up being shoved into the first-generation Q7.
