When engineering muscle and marketing needs co-conspire to compete, wacky meets wonderful. Prior to 2015’s Dieselgate scandal, Audi was the pioneering power behind all things diesel, an incontrovertible truth that was helped in no small part by the learnings gleaned following 8 Le Mans victories by its oil-burning prototypes. It even built a V12 diesel, which was supposed to go into the R8, but ended up being shoved into the first-generation Q7.
