The length of the memory crisis is something of a hot topic right now given that it has directly impacted the prices of so many different consumer electronics. Initially, it was suspected to last through most of 2026, but reports quickly changed to things stretching into 2027. Companies like Samsung had reported most or all of its stock for this year being gone. Samsung had later said that it believes the issues with low supply and continually higher prices would last well into next year.
Now it looks like it may be significantly longer than that. In other words, consumers might want to prepare themselves for higher prices on things like phones, laptops, gaming devices, and RAM and SSD components themselves for at least another year and beyond.
Silicon Motion CEO expects the length of the memory crisis to extend beyond 2028
If you’re someone who’s an enthusiast of building PCs, or just someone who wants to upgrade a PC, the current memory crisis is probably not something fun to go through. Even if you’re just trying to buy a pre-built PC, prices are higher on those as well. Because of the higher prices on memory, SSD, and GPUs.
So it’s probably not exciting to learn that there’s a possibility that this could be the reality of the market until sometime in 2028. According to the CEO of Silicon Motion, Chia-Chang Gou, that’s what’s expected to happen. Chia-Chang Gou states that these DRAM and NAND Flash are expected to remain in short supply and that the issue will be difficult to resolve in the short term.
Meaning, it’s not going to be a problem that goes away quickly. With that in mind, the current higher prices are here to stay for a while longer it looks like. It’s also noted that prices are expected to rise further. So if you thought memory, SSDs, and GPUs, as well as the products that contain them were expensive now, there’s a chance they’ll be more expensive in the coming year.
