When Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo, it proved that Apple was capable of creating a product that was actually value for money. Priced at $599, the value proposition was off the charts. Unfortunately, it looks like that value proposition is about to go away as there are rumors that we could see an increase in price of the MacBook Neo.
MacBook Neo price could increase
According to former Bloomberg reporter Tim Culpan, he wrote in his Culpium newsletter that Apple may hike the price of the MacBook Neo up by $100. But why? It turns out we have the ongoing memory crisis to blame.
It seems that the success of the MacBook Neo took Apple by surprise. According to CEO Tim Cook, the company was bullish on the laptop. However, it seems that they might have underestimated just how popular it was. So much so that the company was facing supply constraints.
As a result, Apple had to decide. They could either sell out of existing inventory, or keep producing more units. It appears the company opted for the latter, but due to the memory crisis and with DRAM being short in supply, Apple could be forced to ditch the cheaper $599 model with 256GB of storage and only offer the 512GB model.
This means that customers who were fine with 256GB of storage will have no choice but to fork out an extra $100 for the 512GB model if they want to get their hands on the laptop. However, take note that none of this has happened yet. Apple’s website still has the 256GB model in stock, so if you were on the fence, you might want to get in quick before that option disappears.
What’s next for the MacBook Neo?
The current MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chipset. This is effectively the same chipset powering the iPhone 16 Pro series, albeit a downbinned version. However, for most people, it’s more than enough for day-to-day use. However, according to the rumors, Apple could bump the next model up to the A19 Pro. It is also rumored to see a jump in base RAM from 8GB to 12GB.Â
That being said, with the memory crisis, we’re not sure how Apple plans to handle pricing. Raising the price would completely destroy the laptop’s value proposition. But not doing so means it would eat into Apple’s profits. We suppose that’s something Apple’s incoming CEO John Ternus will have to decide.
