A little over a week ago, there was a worrying report that suggested that Apple’s iPhone Ultra could be delayed indefinitely. This was allegedly due to a rattling hinge on the iPhone Ultra that did not meet Apple’s standards, which meant the company had to go back to the drawing board to figure it out. But it seems there was nothing to worry about.
New report shuts down rumors of iPhone Ultra rattling hinge
According to a post on Weibo by tipster Fixed Focus Digital, they have shut down the rumors that the iPhone Ultra had a rattling hinge. They claim that their own sources have told them that Apple isn’t facing any manufacturing difficulties, despite what the rumors are claiming. But don’t get too excited just yet.
The tipster claims that while the rattling hinge rumors might not be accurate, Apple is facing some production issues. This is linked to surface mount technology production. This is where the electronic components are placed directly on the surface of the PCB. It’s an interesting problem, namely because we don’t think we’ve ever heard of Apple running into those issues before.
However, it is possible that because this is Apple’s first foldable, they might have some issues. After all, approaching the production of a foldable phone is different from your standard phone. Since Apple doesn’t really have any experience in this area, issues are bound to arise.
The post says that this has resulted in slow capacity utilization and a less-than-optimistic outlook. We’re not sure if this could cause any delays or maybe result in shortage of inventory at the start, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Coming this September
That being said, assuming all goes to plan, Apple will most likely unveil the iPhone Ultra this September. This is when Apple usually announces its new iPhones. However, this year will be slightly different.
Instead of the full iPhone 18 lineup, Apple is rumored to split the launch of its new phones. This September, Apple might only announce the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max phones along with the iPhone Ultra. The base iPhone 18 might only be announced in the early part of 2027. It could also launch alongside the iPhone 18e.
This is part of Apple’s apparent new strategy. It’s also similar to how other companies operate, where they host multiple launch events for their phones instead of doing it all in one go.
