While pre-orders for Apple’s first foldable don’t open for a couple more weeks, that’s not stopping people from building apps for the iPhone Duo. And this new app is hitting the nostalgia strings for millennials; it’s called Duo-Man.
This app replicates the experience of using a classic Walkman, which many people alive today have no idea what that even is.
Basically, the app can use both screens and mimics how Walkmans used to function. You can open the Duo to pick your music, “insert” your cassette tape, then close the device to start listening. Obviously, you’re not actually using cassette tapes and players with physical buttons, but the developer says he tried to make the experience feel as authentic as possible. He recorded the button clicks and the static noise from a real Walkman to incorporate into the app.
Foldable phones have been around for years, but only now are we seeing clever apps being built
The first foldable phone (designed to fold in half) launched in 2019, but it never really gained much market share. Until now. With Apple launching its first foldable, foldable phones are going to become a lot more popular. Which is always the case: when Apple finally does it, that’s when the industry fully adopts it.
We’ve seen a few apps built for foldable phones in the past, but nothing like this. And the reason? Apple. Now that Apple has one, more developers are going to get on board to develop for foldables. A big reason for this is the major install base of iOS, compared to Android. It’s why a lot of apps come to iOS before Android. Huge install base, with not many different hardware configurations to adapt to.
There’s no way to download this app just yet, which isn’t surprising since the iPhone Duo isn’t out yet.
