Google first teased the new Home Speaker during the Pixel 10 announcement last year, and we later got further details in an exclusive. After a few other teases, Google is making the device official, nearly 10 months later.
The Google Home Speaker is essentially an updated Google Home with support for Gemini now, instead of Google Assistant. Google says that this is their first audio device that was built for Gemini.
Some of the big differences that you’ll notice here, with it being built for Gemini is, that you can use logic in your requests. Instead of remembering you need to say your command in a certain way, you can just talk to Gemini like you would a human. You can also get more done in one breath and make easy corrections. Gemini also lets you ask more complex questions than Google Assistant. Gemini is able to reason through multiple steps to answer nuanced questions.
Of course, with Google Home Speaker, you’re also going to need Google Home Premium (which is included in the Google AI Pro plan, which is really nice). This gives you Gemini Live, so you can just chat with Gemini and have natural, free-flowing chats where you are able to brainstorm, change topics, and interrupt Gemini. You also get Camera History Search, so you can ask your speaker to describe current or recent activity that your Nest Cams have captured. And finally, there’s Home Briefs, so you can ask Gemini for a summary of what happened around the house while you were out.
Crystal clear, 360-degree audio
Obviously, the Google Home Speaker isn’t just about Gemini. It’s also about great audio quality, which Google says you’ll get 360-degree sound that is crystal clear. It also has advanced microphone processing that adapts to your environment so Gemini can better understand you.
As if that wasn’t enough, Google Home Speaker also works together with Google TV Streamer. So you can pair up two speakers with a Google TV Streamer, and turn your living room into a mini home theater with spatial surround sound.
Available June 25 for $99
The Google Home Speaker will be available starting next Thursday, June 25, for $99.
It’s available in four colors: Hazel, Porcelain worldwide, with the US getting a Jade and Berry option. All colors are wrapped in a custom 3D-knit textile, and it also features a new light ring underflow that can softly communicate when it’s listening.
