Many club racing auto enthusiasts start their competitive career by converting a standard, road-going vehicle into a racing machine. However, this can often be a painful exercise: taking a perfectly good vehicle and then immediately throwing much of it away. So Honda Performance Development (HPD) felt their pain and came up with a better idea by offering a turnkey competition machine to customers. The process began before the Civic Type R became a finished road car and was available only to members of Honda’s Racing Line competitor program. Honda also had other ways to help, but customers still needed a competition license to participate.
