There’s a new smart necklace on the market that tracks UV exposure: meet ‘The Gem’ from The90, a company founded by a former Fitbit executive, Stacy Salvi, who spent eight years at Fitbit before and after Google’s acquisition in 2021. This is designed to help women track UV exposure. The company calls this a new category of wearable and says it can be worn with existing jewelry.

The company is claiming it’s the first personal sun intelligence system that measures UV exposure. The necklace includes sensors that measure UVA and UVB rays in real-time. It updates the data throughout the day as you move in and around sunlight. This means it should be delivering a relatively accurate assessment of sun exposure whether you’re walking outside or sitting by a sunny window.
The companion app receives the data and offers personal recommendations based on the unique skin profile, genetics, habits, and sensitivities. It’ll offer actionable advice, including personal UV thresholds, sunscreen reminders, and optimal sunlight exposure windows. It’ll even alert when it’s time to seek shade.
Early bird price is $199
This accessory definitely makes sense and could come in handy, especially during summer. As for some tech specs, The Gem will offer 7 days of battery life on a single charge. It’ll take just 2 hours to quickly juice up. While it’s splash-proof, the company warns not to submerge. The product size is apparently similar to the diameter of a US nickel. There’s Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity.
The Gem wearable accessory is now available for purchase from the company’s official website in gold and silver shades. Early adopters can get one for $199 for a limited time. It’ll, however, eventually cost $299. The company promises that orders will ship in June.
