UFS 5.0 storage testing for mobile devices is rumored to now be heating up, and it appears as if this newer version of storage for smaller devices like phones and tablets has the potential to be a big bump from the current standard. You might not think too much about how your phone’s storage works. You just know how much you have and that it stores all of your photos, apps, and other files.
Storage plays a big role, though, bigger than many might suspect. Sure, it’s just for having a place to keep all your files. That being said, it can have an impact on the user experience if it’s too slow. For example, when transferring files to or from the storage or to other folders. Speeding up file transfers is allegedly one of the benefits of UFS 5.0 storage that’s now in testing.
UFS 5.0 storage testing could lead to an early 2027 launch of phones containing it
With the storage now being tested, it’s rumored that we could see phones using this tech launch in the back half of the year. According to Abhishek Yadav on X, phones with UFS 5.0 storage could arrive in early 2027. While this is just speculation, if this kind of storage is already being tested for mobile devices, then it’s reasonable to assume that phones toward the end of the year could use it. According to Abhishek, late 2026 could be when prototypes with this storage arrive on the scene.
In addition to speculating on possible launch windows, it’s also stated that UFS 5.0 storage could support up to 10.8 GB/s of theoretical bandwidth. It’s also mentioned that it will support faster large file transfers. Those who use their phone for work purposes will probably make use of this capability quite often.
Additionally, UFS 5.0 could allow for twice the bandwidth, and make recording in 4K and 8K more stable.
