These three legendary smartphones debuted way back in 2017 with impressive curved screens and slim bodies. Their planned software support officially expired years ago, with the final official maintenance cycle wrapping up back in 2022. Yet, as Android Authority reports, notifications for a brand-new over-the-air firmware update have started waking up these aging handsets across the United States.

According to carrier documentation published by Verizon, network engineers began deploying the surprise system update to legacy consumer devices. If you happen to dig one of these old models out of a drawer, do not expect a flashy visual overhaul or modern multi-tasking tools.

The main goals of the package focus on increasing overall operational efficiency, boosting system device stability, and optimizing performance metrics. The unexpected maintenance strategy mirrors a similar choice made by Apple. The Cupertino giant famously pushed out network patches to the old iPhone 5s lineup to keep key messaging services working. In the case of Samsung, the update ensures the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 models that are still out there can keep chugging along just a little bit smoother.
Currently, the rollout remains tightly focused on specific carrier models within the US. However, the availability will likely expand to carrier-free models in the coming days or hours.
