Leaving your smartphone in your pocket just got a lot easier for Telegram power users. Half a decade after pulling the plug on its dedicated wearable software, the messaging platform is making a sudden comeback to the smartwatch ecosystem. A Telegram app dual rollout is already happening for both Apple Watch and Wear OS platforms.
A completely fresh canvas
The landscape of wearable tech looks radically different than it did when Telegram last supported Android watches. Back then, Google’s Pixel Watch lineup did not even exist, and Samsung devices relied on the older Tizen software framework. The quiet launch of this revamped Wear OS application opens the door for a massive generation of modern smartwatch users to handle conversations right from their wrists.
The brand-new app is surprisingly capable out of the gate. It offers full access to standard text chat histories, the ability to read long-form messages, and a system to play or record voice notes directly through the wearable hardware. For the Android crowd, users can also pin important chats, mute loud group threads, or delete messages on the fly.
A tale of two development teams
Interestingly, the launch features a strange, unequal split in features depending on whether you are using an Apple Watch or an Android device. Telegram’s official release notes pointed out that the Android development team prioritized chat management features like pinning and muting. On the other hand, the iOS developer focused on location sharing and sticker support. The company poked fun at this internal disconnect in a statement, jokingly admitting they have no idea why the features were split up but confirming their plan to have both teams borrow the missing tools from each other in an upcoming software patch.
Beyond the wrist-based upgrades, the same platform update packs a few notable QoL adjustments for power users on smartphones. The app now features vastly improved text formatting options for automated bots, markdown file compatibility, and better link interactions in polls. Furthermore, users can now long-press a web hyperlink to force it to load in an external web browser rather than using Telegram’s integrated in-app browser view.
The new smartwatch companion tools are starting to hit global app stores now. If you are a regular Telegram user, you no longer have to constantly pull your phone to keep up with intense group chats.
