T-Mobile’s customers who frequently travel on American Airlines and United Airlines flights will no longer be able to access the free in-flight Wi-Fi perk. In a recent announcement, the carrier said it is withdrawing the long-running free Wi-Fi perk from certain airlines.
United and American Airlines passengers will no longer be able to access T-Mobile’s free Wi-Fi
For years, T-Mobile customers could enjoy free in-flight Wi-Fi services on United Airlines and American Airlines simply by confirming their phone numbers. The perk was widely used by many T-Mobile consumers, as it made it easier for the users to stay connected to the internet during flights. The perk was specifically more useful on longer journeys where access to messages, emails, and browsing is pretty much necessary.
However, T-Mobile has announced that it is removing the benefit from United Airlines and American Airlines flights. The good thing is that the carrier is not entirely removing the services. Instead, it has not put it behind a paywall. As a result, consumers who want to stay connected to the internet will now have to pay for the usage that was previously included in their mobile plans.
Airlines now opt for high-speed satellite internet connectivity
United Airlines has already started installing the latest high-speed satellite Wi-Fi across its fleet. However, some regional and main-line aircraft still rely on slower connections. And between all this, the withdrawal of the free Wi-Fi services by T-Mobile has left a gap. Thankfully, most airlines plan to continue upgrades over the next few years to offer faster and more reliable service to all passengers.
With that said, the decision reflects a broader shift happening in the entire aviation industry. Airlines are slowly shifting from traditional Wi-Fi services to satellite-based Wi-Fi networks. It is fast, smooth, and more reliable.
