Spotify has made several announcements for superfans at its third Investor Day at New York City. As part of a new partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG), Spotify announced licensed AI covers and remixes using songs. Additionally, the company is bringing a new fan-focused ticketing system called Reserved. Notably, both features cater to Spotify Premium users.
Spotify is letting users create licensable AI-generated remix and covers of songs
Spotify’s upcoming generative AI remix tool will soon be available to Premium users. It allows fans to create licensed covers and remixes using songs from participating artists and songwriters directly inside Spotify. Unlike unofficial AI songs, which are everywhere on social media these days, this one is quite different, at least in terms of licensing.
The audio streaming giant says the fan-made remixes and covers of songs will “open up additional revenue streams and new ways to drive discovery.” The company further adds that the model will enable artists and songwriters to share revenue from AI-generated licensed covers and remixes on Spotify.
Speaking about the model, Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström said, “What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part.” As of now, the new AI remix tool will launch as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers.
A new concert ticketing system for superfans
Besides, AI remixes and covers, Spotify has also announced Reserved for Premium users. It is a new concert ticket system that rewards active listeners with early access to shows before tickets go public. The company says it will identify “real fans” using listening activity, shares, engagement, and other Spotify behavior. Eligible users will get in-app notifications and email during the limited purchase window. Notably, a user can buy up to two tickets before general sales begin. The company adds that by doing this, it helps ensure “more tickets will go straight to fans instead of scalpers.” Speaking of which, the audio streaming giant also confirmed that it will monitor activity to filter out bots and fake engagement accounts.
