Android Auto has been gaining momentum lately, with several new features coming to the platform, including in-car entertainment. We’re talking about the redesigned music player and more. Well, today, Spotify decided to take things up a notch by launching a native in-car app built on Android Automotive OS. The app is now rolling out to select Audi vehicles.
Spotify’s first native Android Automotive app works without connecting your phone
Android Auto basically projects apps from your phone onto the car’s display. Meanwhile, Android Automotive runs directly on the vehicle’s infotainment system. A native app means drivers can now use Spotify without connecting their phones via Bluetooth or a cable. You can download it and use it like a regular app. The music streaming giant has been working on the app for a year.
During this period, developers moved beyond Google’s standard interface templates to gain more control over design and features. The Spotify app features a car-friendly interface, with familiar menus and personalized recommendations. There’s also better integration with the vehicle’s displays and voice controls.
The experience goes beyond just ditching the cable. Spotify is making the app more convenient for drivers. You only need to sign in once using a QR code or pairing code, and Spotify will automatically resume playback whenever you start the car. This eliminates the need to reach for the phone every time.
Car-friendly interface and hands-free experience
Audi car owners can also use “Hey Audi” or talk directly to Spotify DJ to play music without even taking hands off the wheel. Meanwhile, for passengers, Spotify Jam lets them scan a QR code and join a shared listening session and add their favorite music to the queue from their phones.
And when you’re parked or charging an EV, music videos, video podcasts, and real-time lyrics become available on the car’s main display. They will, however, disappear once you start moving, but passengers can still enjoy them on secondary displays.
The app is rolling out through the Audi Application Store. It’s available for the 2026 Audi Q5, A5, and A6, along with the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. Both Free and Premium users can access it across 47 Audi markets. The upcoming Audi Q7 and Q9 will also support the app. As for other automakers, Spotify plans to expand the app over the coming year.
