Challenge Accepted
Due for a reveal later in 2026, we likely see a new track-special Ferrari make it to the lineup. Just like 296 Speciale, no production cap is expected for this one, but there will be a key differentiator between the two, and that’s a hybrid system delete in the pursuit of performance. Ferrari already has a 296 Challenge, but that’s track-only and not road legal.
Since earlier this year, we’ve already spotted a test mule that looks a lot like the 296 Challenge. Because it was driving on the road, we can assert that it’s a road-legal version, which can only mean that it’s very likely a Challenge Stradale. The last Challenge Stradale was based on the 360 Modena, which debuted over two decades ago. Now, 20 years later, we’re excited to see the 296 take up the mantle.
Not Your Average 296
Our source, The Supercar Blog, managed to secure some more spicy details of the new Ferrari 296 Challenge Stradale, or at least that is the assumed name at this point in time. This isn’t the first time that the test mule has been spotted. Other sightings were logged earlier this year, but a few more details have emerged, plus a potential November launch date.
The Challenge Stradale sports a very interesting kit all around. The biggest thing that sticks out is the massive swan-neck wing at the back, which is most likely made of carbon fiber. On its side, we get a more aggressive side skirt along with an exaggerated front spoiler. You can still pick out that it is a Ferrari 296 thanks to the headlights, but the additional aero parts tell us that this is far from a standard model.
Also, our source poked around a little more and reported that Ferrari is dropping the hybrid system on the twin-turbo V6, making it a pure ICE vehicle. On the one hand, this sounds like a downgrade, but considering what it takes to make a Challenge Stradale that’s lightweight and track-focused, the last thing you’d need is a heavy hybrid system to weigh the car down. The 296 Challenge will reportedly make 720 horsepower and weigh only 2,866 lbs dry, according to the source.
Debut November 2026
Finally, there is a likelihood that this car will come in the latter quarter of the year, notably in November, word from the grapevine and all. I’d say that this is great news for Ferrari fans who want a more serious version of the 296, or collectors who love the special track-focused editions of the Prancing Horse’s supercars.
At this point in time, there is no clear launch date or even an announcement from Ferrari, but all sources point to November as the month we can expect this model to launch.
