Sony has announced its next PlayStation State of Play and it will be taking place on June 2, with the company hosting the event live on the usual suspects like YouTube and Twitch, but it will also be hosting live showings at Alamo Drafthouse theater locations around the US. Sony has done this sort of thing before, so it’s not a completely out of left field decision. It certainly seems unexpected though.
The June 2 PlayStation State of Play will be over an hour long, Sony confirms, and it’ll start off with new footage of the upcoming Wolverine game that’s being developed by Insomniac Games. There has been plenty of footage shown of this game already, including gameplay. So it’ll be interesting to see what sort of new footage Sony has for it that warrants giving it the spotlight at the very start.
The PlayStation State of Play live theater showings have some wondering if Sony is planning to showcase something big
It isn’t clear what all Sony plans to showcase at its next State of Play, other than the Wolverine focus at the beginning since Sony confirmed this in an official PlayStation Blog post. The company also says that there will be “over 60 minutes of news and announcements for games.” It doesn’t say what games, or if every announcement will be related to games only and have nothing to do with hardware.
However, the fact that Sony is hosting live showings at Alamo Drafthouse has some people wondering if it might be trying to farm some live reactions to the announcements. If that’s the case, it would probably only do this if it was showing off something big. Or at least something it thinks is big. Although this is pure speculation, this wouldn’t necessarily be a bad way to do the first initial announcement for the PS6. Of course, this doesn’t mean Sony will use this opportunity to do just that. But if you think about it, it would make sense. That’s the sort of announcement that would elicit some pretty excited reactions from interested viewers. Sony could record some of those reactions and use that footage for future trailers and announcements.
If you live near an Alamo Drafthouse you can go to one of these showings. It’s worth noting that it’s only happening at some of them, and tickets will reportedly be “free but limited.” You can view the full list of locations here.
