Sony isn’t backing down from its recent decision to stop production on physical game discs for PlayStation consoles. Back on July 2, Sony announced it would be ending physical game production for future titles after 2028. Sony hasn’t given any details on which generations of its PlayStation console this would impact. Given the timing, it probably includes both the current PS5 and the upcoming PS6.
This decision has upset many gamers, who have taken to online forums to voice their discontent with Sony’s choice to move to an all-digital future. Some have said that they’re considering abandoning the PlayStation platform going forward, and would instead switch to playing PC games on Steam. Others have simply tried to get Sony to reverse its decision by playing to the emotional and nostalgic side of things, stating that physical games are special to many gamers for one reason or another. Sony will not be swayed.
Sony says it will not reverse its decision to stop physical game disc production
Like the petition to get Sony to keep Destiny 2 (and the franchise) alive, Sony isn’t going to reverse its decision to stop making physical PlayStation games. In the company’s most recent earnings call, Sony CFO Lin Tao said that Sony “put in a lot of thought and time” coming to this decision. Tao continues by saying that Sony “cautiously considered the issue,” and that it’s going to “cautiously move forward” with the decision.
For Sony’s part, Sony and Tao did acknowledge that players weren’t happy about this, and that they understand physical disc games being special to them. Sony will continue to produce physical copies of games up until the 2028 deadline, but it will not be producing physical games past that point. In the past, Sony had championed the sharing of games by letting a friend borrow a physical game disc. Times have changed.
