Sony has recently filed for a cloud gaming patent that could genuinely make a big difference in the quality of streaming games to your console. Over the years Sony has had more than one cloud gaming option available for players on its PlayStation consoles. PlayStation Now was the first real version of this available, and now cloud gaming is simply part of PlayStation Plus, though you’ll need to be subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium to get it.
Cloud gaming quality has come quite a long way in the past 6+ years. One thing hasn’t really changed though. The best cloud gaming experience will still require the person playing games to have a good internet connection if they want low-latency streams, decent visuals, and good performance. If the internet isn’t fast enough, the resolution and latency takes a hit. If the internet connection isn’t reliable enough, then the cloud gaming session times out and players get disconnected. Sony is trying to solve this by lessening the amount of data that needs to pass through the stream.
Sony has published a cloud gaming patent that uses AI to reconstruct punched holes in images
According to Sony’s patent, the feature it’s developing for cloud gaming will basically punch holes in the image that is being streamed to the player and using an AI model, will reconstruct those parts of the images once it has been streamed over the network. This method for moving the game image to the player is an attempt to lessen the amount of data that needs to be streamed so that connectivity takes less of a hit. Nothing is mentioned as of yet that talks about whether or not Sony will actually implement this in its offerings. Sony also hasn’t officially announced this tech, which means it’s still a work in progress.
The patent reads, “Techniques for reducing data content in an image, including receiving an image at a first data model, removing a plurality of image portions from the image, using a machine learning inference process implemented by the first data model, to thereby insert a plurality of holes in the image and inserting, using the machine learning inference process implemented, at least one anchor element into one or more of the plurality of holes, wherein each anchor element is representative of detail within the respective image portion.”
