Sony and TSMC are partnering up to make image sensors. This is monumental news, actually, as we’re looking at some of the biggest companies in the mobile tech industry.
It’s well-known that the vast majority of higher-end camera sensors on smartphones come from Sony, while TSMC is the most-coveted manufacturer of smartphone processors, amongst other things.
Sony and TSMC are partnering up to make better smartphone camera sensors
The two companies are planning to spend 1 trillion yen ($6.32 million) in order to make next-generation microchips used in image sensors, according ot a report by Nikkei.
This joint venture is owned about 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC. They’ll start commercial production as early as 2029 in Japan, the report claims. Sony’s sensor design expertise and TSMC’s manufacturing and process technology are coming together, and the expectations are high.
The two companies also said that this partnership will explore opportunities in physical artificial intelligence applications. That goes for automotive and robotics, amongst other things. So the partnership could expand in other technology aspects.
These are two huge players in the industry
Just to be perfectly clear, Sony is the world’s largest maker of image sensors for smartphones and many other devices. TSMC is the world’s largest contract chipmaker. Just to give you an idea of the scope of these companies.
Considering all that mojo, an improvement in smartphone camera sensors is expected to be the end result of this. It remains to be seen how it’ll go, though. We’re still about three years away from the first results of this partnership, so it’s too early to tell.
Reuters asked for a comment from both companies on all this, but neither company provided one. We’ll keep you updated if any additional information comes to light in the coming days, which is a possibility, of course.
