Some of your Discord conversations have the capability to end up Google Search as part of Discord’s new change to discoverable conversations on the platform. Right now, you can’t go to Google and type up something up in the search bar and get results that come from Discord. Say you’re looking for help on a game that you’re playing and looking for answers. If conversations about that topic have been had on Discord at some point, they won’t show up on Google. They do, however, sometimes show up on Google if those conversations come from Reddit.
Complete with word for word details of specific responses. Soon, this is exactly what will happen with Discord, though there are limitations to this change and Discord is giving users a way to opt out. The change will be enabled by default, however.
In its official blog post on October 28, Discord confirmed that it would be implementing a change that will add a server web page to all discoverable servers. These kinds of servers are ones that really anyone can join with no requirement to have an invite link. They’re also servers to have tons and tons of users, and can be an official game server or a server for a brand.
Not all Discord conversation will end up on Google Search
Discord knows that some users may not want their conversations being searchable on the web, which is why Discord is putting in a few avenues of control. For starters, it’s possible to disable this. Under the Data & Privacy section of your profile settings, there will be a new toggle that you can turn off next to a feature labeled ‘Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.’ If you disable that toggle, your stuff won’t show up on search engines.
Server admins can also toggle which channels inside of a server take part in the discoverable conversations on web pages. What’s more, is that conversations from private channels won’t be discoverable, so those small servers with just you and 20 of your in-game friends won’t have anything to worry about. Discord says these changes start going live on November 16, and channel summaries will roll out gradually. Channel messages will starting rolling out in the middle of December.
