A Google Home speaker isn’t something you would expect to end up with data downloads that surpass hundreds of GB of data on a daily basis, but that is reportedly what is happening for some users who own Google’s smart speakers. The issue, which Google has officially acknowledged, is that some users were experiencing situations where their Google Home speaker would continually try to download up to 200GB of data per day as a background download.
This led people to wonder what would constitute such a large file download over and over. Accounts seem to vary from user to user. One reportedly had their speaker trying to download up to 200GB per day, while another reports having around 132GB downloaded by their speaker over a month-long period. Some speakers are entirely unaffected.
Google Home speaker downloads of this size will have a fix rolling out soon
Google doesn’t mention a reason for this issue or what’s causing it. However, it has said that it knows of the issue, and it’s already working to fix it with an update. Google hasn’t given specific timing details for all users on when this update should be installed, but it has reportedly already rolled out the fix as of October 19. Those with a Google Home speaker can check to see if the update is available for their unit and install it.
This bug follows another issue which started surfacing for users back in July, where some Google Home and Nest Home speakers were taking up to 30 seconds to respond to voice commands. Google has since fixed that bug with an update. It also recently added some new functionality to Nest Mini and Nest Audio speakers, which the company still maintains with software patches, but no longer sells.
