For years, Android enthusiasts enjoyed a healthy illusion of choice. While OPPO, OnePlus, and Realme shared the same corporate parent banner under BBK Electronics, they operated as highly independent entities. However, this spirit is coming to an abrupt end. It seems that OPPO is executing a massive corporate consolidation that will permanently retire both OxygenOS and Realme UI custom Android skins.
OxygenOS and Realme UI set to vanish on ColorOS merger
The latest information comes from the tech outlet Smartprix, citing a highly reliable industry insider. The aggressive restructuring aims to cut the massive financial overhead required to support three distinct Android software teams. To cut down on redundant research and development costs, future smartphones across all three brands will officially run ColorOS, leaving behind any unique software identities.
While Realme users might adapt quickly—given that their interface already borrowed heavily from OPPO’s codebase—this change is a massive blow to the core OnePlus community. Since the launch of the original OnePlus One, OxygenOS stood as the definitive gold standard for Android software. It was praised globally for its lightning-fast speed, customization tools and lack of bloatware.
The transition into a single software platform actually traces back to 2021. That year, when OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau announced the unification of the underlying codebases. While the software experiences remained separate on paper, the interface lines blurred significantly over the years. OnePlus had already dropped its dedicated software in mainland China years ago, replacing it with ColorOS for domestic consumers. Now, that regional strategy is becoming the global default.
Clues of a larger global withdrawal
The quiet elimination of these Android skins is only the final step in a much larger operational retreat. Observers have spotted clear indicators of a brand shutdown happening behind the scenes for several months. In key European markets, the official OnePlus web storefronts have actively begun directing visiting consumers toward core OPPO hardware offerings.
Simultaneously, retail inventories across the United Kingdom and the United States have steadily dried up without any signs of product refreshes on the horizon. Reports indicate that OPPO has even started canceling the brand’s global product lineups, narrowing future business operations strictly to regional strongholds in India and China.
The Android Headlines Take
By pulling back its retail footprint and abandoning the foundational OxygenOS software that made these devices stand out, the parent conglomerate is effectively ending the era of the independent “flagship killer” OnePlus brand. That said, the current OxygenOS and ColorOS have long since become twins. OnePlus abandoned the design language consistent with Google’s Android vision years ago in favor of more features and customization options. So, fans of the brand will have already grown accustomed to the change, and those looking for a clean, alternative Android experience have probably already looked elsewhere.
