
Samsung‘s Android 17-based One UI 9.0 update brings a strict lockscreen security policy that permanently locks Galaxy phones after 13 failed attempts, requiring a full factory reset to regain access. The overhaul aims to prevent automated brute force attacks by severely limiting the total number of passcode retries an unauthorized user gets.
Escalating lockouts and a point of no return
In earlier software versions, users enjoyed a pretty generous retry window. However, One UI 9.0 has an aggressive escalation schedule that increases wait times after each wrong entry. The first five wrong entries bring a short one minute time out and the penalty ramp grows sharply thereafter. Six failures lock the screen for five minutes, expanding to 15 minutes at seven, 30 minutes at eight, and an hour and a half by the ninth mistake.
If someone keeps guessing, the tenth attempt brings a four-hour lockout, and the eleventh jumps to 12 hours. This continues until the twelfth attempt imposes a full 24-hour freeze. Surpassing that twelfth attempt leads straight to a permanent lockdown. On the thirteenth consecutive failure, One UI 9.0 completely signals the operating system.

Samsung explicitly confirmed it cannot remotely recover local credentials. So, the device leaves no alternative pathway to regain access other than a full factory reset. This wipe will permanently delete all local files, photos and settings that are not backed up. Plus, it will require users to authenticate with their registered Samsung and Google accounts to bypass Factory Reset Protection afterward.
Smart safeguards against everyday typos
Harsh penalties can easily backfire on legitimate owners. With this in mind, Samsung built several thoughtful interface safeguards to cushion daily use.
First, the lockscreen now actively displays a countdown timer alongside clear warning text showing the exact number of remaining attempts once a user enters the high-risk zone. Plus, the system includes smart attempt counting to prevent accidental lockouts.
If an anxious user or a playing child rapidly types the exact same incorrect PIN twice in a row, One UI 9.0 registers it as a single failed attempt rather than penalizing the user twice. This logic protects against double-tap typos while keeping the pressure on actual hacking attempts.
Samsung also reminded users that while biometric unlock options handle daily access, Android’s core authentication policy still requires entering the backup PIN at least once every 72 hours. This makes making secure offline record-keeping vital.
