Samsung has successfully implemented punch-hole selfie sensors across almost its entire smartphone lineup. Yet, curiously, the company’s tablet lineup hasn’t followed the exact same path. Galaxy tablet users still navigate around traditional screen notches or thicker outer bezels instead of a punch hole to house the front-facing camera. However, a subtle discovery deep within Samsung’s latest software beta suggests that this design philosophy might be shifting.
The clue comes directly from newly added device rotation animations uncovered inside the One UI 9.0 firmware. Folks at SamMobile noticed that these fresh system graphics depict a distinctly tablet-shaped device. In one specific animation, the front-facing camera appears as a small, circular punch hole centered perfectly along the longer edge of the screen. In a companion graphic, the cutout repositions to the shorter side, mimicking standard smartphone behavior when flipping orientations.
Reading into the code
It is important to take these early software findings with a grain of salt. Tech firms frequently use generic, stylized hardware illustrations for help screens, settings menus, and quick user tutorials rather than showing exact copies of unreleased retail products.
However, what’s interesting about this is the timeline. These specific graphics are completely absent from current One UI 8.5 software builds, meaning design teams crafted them specifically for the newer One UI 9.0. Whether these animations are simply modernized placeholders or an intentional hint at an upcoming hardware redesign remains an open question.
The tablet launch calendar
If Samsung is indeed prepping a tablet with a punch-hole screen, we likely won’t see it on stage anytime soon. The company is gearing up for its highly anticipated July Unpacked event, but industry insiders do not expect any major tablet reveals to share the spotlight with the latest foldable devices. Traditionally, Samsung spaces out its flagship tablet rollouts, launching them independently later in the year.
Moving to a punch-hole setup would let Samsung trim down tablet bezels even further. It would also match the premium aesthetic of its mobile division. For now, these findings stand as a compelling possibility rather than definitive proof.
