As it stands, Apple uses OLED displays for its iPad Pro models. The rest of the iPad lineup continues using LCD. It’s not necessarily bad because honestly, they still look pretty good. However, we’re sure that many would love to see Apple transition more tablets to OLED. The good news is that it might happen next year. Apple could bring OLED displays to its iPad Air in 2027.
2027 iPad Air could feature an OLED display
According to a report out of South Korea, Apple is getting ready to transition its iPad Air to OLED in 2027. The report claims Samsung Display will be providing Apple with the necessary OLED displays for their tablets. This is good news for many because Apple’s iPad Pro models are pretty expensive. Plus, not everyone needs to go “pro.”
So, when will Apple make this official? The report claims it might be announced at the same time as this year’s refresh. This means that we’re looking at potentially March 2027. Apple recently refreshed the iPad Air. The company brought its M4 chipset to the tablet, closing the gap between the Pro and non-Pro models.
It’s not surprising to see this tech trickle down. As the technology advances, producing it becomes cheaper. This in turn allows Apple to offer it to some of its cheaper models, making them even more value for money. We’re not sure if the switch to OLED could result in a price hike, but we’ll have to wait until next year to find out.
Apple’s OLED ambitions
That being said, the 2027 iPad Air getting OLED is part of the company’s plans to bring OLED to more of its products. Back then, the Apple Watch was the only Apple product to feature OLED. Apple eventually brought it to the iPad Pro and iPhone. But the company isn’t stopping there.
According to the rumors, Apple is working on an OLED MacBook Pro. However, this isn’t just a display panel upgrade. The rumors are claiming that it could also feature touch support, ultimately creating some kind of hybrid device. Apple is also rumored to be reworking macOS, where it will come with new menus and a redesigned interface better optimized for touch input.
