
Samsung Electronics is taking a major step toward fully automated silicon manufacturing. The tech giant officially announced a strategic partnership with French startup Mistral AI to integrate custom AI models directly into Samsung’s semiconductor design and manufacturing operations.
Unveiled during a South Korea-France state summit in Paris, the deal also includes a major financial commitment. As reported by CNBC, Samsung Electronics led Mistral AI’s €3 billion Series D funding round alongside the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund. The investment values Mistral at over €21 billion (~$24.4 billion) post-money. This positions the Paris-based lab as a premier European partner for advanced hardware integration.
Secure, on-premises AI for sensitive fab data
Chip design blueprints and manufacturing parameters contain highly sensitive intellectual property. So, relying on standard third-party cloud servers poses a massive security risk. To solve this issue, Samsung and Mistral are building specialized AI models that operate entirely on-premises within Samsung’s private data centers.
Deploying Mistral’s flagship LLMs, such as Mistral Large, directly inside isolated company infrastructure allows Samsung engineers to analyze complex fab data safely. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch noted that the collaboration focuses on building custom, trusted AI tools that integrate seamlessly with physical manufacturing rather than relying on external computing pipelines.
Spotting defects and stabilizing semiconductor yields
As semiconductor processes shrink to advanced nanometer nodes, production complexity skyrockets. Samsung plans a phased rollout of Mistral’s technology across its Device Solutions division, which oversees memory, logic, and foundry operations.
On the fab floor, engineers will apply targeted AI models to handle real-time data analysis, equipment optimization, and automated defect detection. Catching microscopic flaws earlier in the manufacturing cycle allows Samsung to shorten development timelines, enhance precision, and stabilize production yields across its facilities.
Executives from both companies said the deal represented a long-term shift in the semiconductor industry. Young Hyun Jun, head of Samsung’s DS division, stated that managing the modern complexity of chips securely is critical to setting a new silicon innovation benchmark. Meanwhile, the equity stake gives Samsung direct access to Mistral’s underlying technology as the AI startup builds out its own independent infrastructure.
