Samsung has released a very interesting blog post, in which it details its journey of making the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra as thin and light as they are.
Samsung’s Galaxy foldables have come a long way in 7 years
As part of this post, Samsung attached an image of all its ‘Galaxy (Z) Fold’ foldables thus far. The journey started way back in 2019, when the original Galaxy Fold arrived. That phone weighed 276 grams and was 17.1mm thick.
Needless to say, its weight and thickness are not impressive at all by today’s standards, but back then, they sure were. Things have changed a lot over the span of 7 years… a lot.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 followed and was 282 grams heavy and 16.8mm thick. While it was slightly thinner, it was heavier than its predecessor. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 managed to lower the weight to 271 grams, and the thickness as well, to 16mm.
Then the Galaxy Z Fold 4 continued that trend with 263 grams and 15.8mm of thickness. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 followed with 253 grams and 13.4mm of thickness, and then the Galaxy Z Fold 6 dropped to 239 grams and 12.1mm of thickness.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was a huge improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 6
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 arrived last year, in 2025, and managed to push things forward by a huge margin. That phone measures only 215 grams in terms of weight, while it is 8.9mm thick. That’s a huge difference compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, not to mention that the crease ended up being much less noticeable.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra kept that same thickness and weight, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 managed to refresh the whole category. That is the company’s first wide foldable, and it’s 9.7mm thick, but it weighs only 201 grams. It’s extremely light in the hand.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a breath of fresh air
As you probably already know, Samsung managed to beat a ton of sales records with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series thus far, mainly thanks to the Galaxy Z Fold 8. While Apple announced its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, yesterday, Samsung has been in the game for a long time. Speaking of which, the iPhone Duo is a wide foldable, and it’s notably thicker and heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
