Samsung has announced that it’s using its Galaxy Watch smartwatches for medical research and drug development studies, in hopes of being able to “generate clinically meaningful evidence for research and drug development.” This isn’t the first time Samsung has used its technology for medical research. Earlier this month, it announced that it was using Galaxy XR technology to offer more comfort and calming experiences to those who were having blood drawn.
For this new Galaxy Watch research initiative, Samsung confirms that it’s partnering with Alcedis, a digital-first clinical research organization with a specialty in data-driven clinical trials. Samsung says that the main reason it’s working with Alcedis is because it’s usually challenging for organizations to take signals from wearable technology and turn that into data that can be used for medical research in a meaningful way. So, this initiative will help to advance these possibilities.
Galaxy Watch medical research will include bioelectrical impedance analysis and electrodermal activity
Samsung doesn’t really explicitly state what it hopes this research will help address. More specifically, what sorts of health-related risks or scenarios that it hopes this data will help solve problems for. That being said, it does mention that the research will include bioelectrical impedance analysis and electrodermal activity.
With that said, the possibilities for what this research leads to seems to be vast. Samsung says that it will help accelerate innovation across the healthcare ecosystem. It’ll also allow researchers to set up the studies at a quicker pace which should ultimately lead to faster results and scientific breakthroughs.
We might think of our smartwatches as just another tool in our daily lives to measure personal health metrics and get notifications at a glance. But they can be used for a very wide array of things, even by the companies that manufacture them. Naturally, Samsung confirms that these research studies will be done with data from users, but only with consent from those users.
