Samsung has officially announced that it will shut down its Samsung News app later this year. This means the widget and dedicated media page on Galaxy devices, including phones and tablets, will no longer be available. For reference, the app offers the latest news, sports, and stock updates, and more.
Samsung News app will shut down for Galaxy users in December
The company announced this in the Samsung News app in India and South Korea. As per the update, Samsung News will shut down on December 21, 2026, at 00:00 UTC. Though the announcement is limited to two regions, it’s likely that the service will also be discontinued in other markets. But it’s better to wait for an official confirmation through official channels.
As you’d expect, Samsung will delete all user data, profiles, and personalization information from its database following its shutdown. The only exception is if local regulations require the company to retain certain information for a certain period. After that, the company will delete that data for good.

The company didn’t give a reason
The company didn’t give exact reasons for this change, but it could be part of streamlining its software ecosystem by discontinuing redundant services. As a refresher, Samsung News launched in 2023 as a replacement for Samsung Free. Before Samsung Free, there was Samsung Daily. It debuted in October 2019, replacing the original Bixby Home feed that launched in April 2017.
Either way, if you were actively relying on Samsung News for your news updates or other information, this move should come as a disappointment. Samsung may replace its News service with Google Discover, which is already an alternative on Galaxy phones and tablets. Besides this change to the News service, Samsung recently announced it’s shutting down the Daily+ service on its TVs and smart monitors.
