The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 will bring back an interesting feature that Samsung ditched last year… an under-display camera (UDC). Well, at least if a tipster is to be believed.
Samsung plans to bring back the UDC camera with the Galaxy Z Fold 9
The information comes from kro, who shared the info via X. He claims that Samsung will bring back UDC after the company ditched it with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 still had that camera on the main panel.
As many of you know, Apple utilized an under-display camera on the main display of its first foldable, the iPhone Duo. We don’t know if that prompted Samsung to bring back its UDC, but it’s possible.
Furthermore, the tipster claims that the phone will get “major internal changes,” and “minimal changes to its overall thickness and design.” Those are not bad news at all, as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is very thin and light for its size and the fact that it’s a foldable phone. It trumps all other wide foldables; it’s not even close.
That phone will also be slightly thinner, it seems
The same tipster shared some initial info on the Galaxy Z Fold 9 on October 1. Back then, he said that Samsung is considering UDC, and now he basically confirmed it. Back then, he also said that Samsung is aiming for a 3.9mm thickness when unfolded and 7.9mm when folded.
For comparison’s sake, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 4.5mm thick when unfolded, and 9.7mm when folded. If the company manages to shave off as much thickness as the tip suggested, that would be another major win.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 is expected to arrive in Q3 next year. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is still kind of a new phone, so we’re not exactly close to the arrival of its successor.
If Samsung ends up sticking to the same release cycle, the phone will arrive in July 2027.
