Last year, Samsung took the wraps off its first Android XR headset, the Galaxy XR. While it’s an impressive piece of tech, it’s hardly practical for day-to-day use. Something like smart glasses probably makes more sense. Well, the good news is that it looks like we could be one step closer to seeing Samsung’s smart glasses become a reality, thanks to a firmware sighting that revealed the Galaxy Glasses.
Galaxy Glasses spotted in Samsung firmware
In a post on X, That Josh Guy revealed the Galaxy Glasses were spotted in the One UI 8.5 SystemUI firmware. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really tell us much, save for an icon that hinted at the glasses themselves. We highly doubt that the icon is meant to be an accurate representation of the actual product. However, it is a sign that things are progressing nicely.
That being said, we’re not really surprised to see this. After all, Samsung had previously confirmed that they were working on smart glasses. In fact, Samsung hinted that they are working with a bunch of companies, including Google, and eyewear brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.
This means that the finished product won’t look like a super geeky device like the Galaxy XR but something that could be worn every day without anyone giving you a second glance. We don’t have an official launch date yet, but maybe we’ll have a better idea at Google I/O 2026, where presumably Google might talk more about its plans for Android XR. Alternatively, Samsung has more events scheduled for this year. Maybe we’ll learn more about it then.
The rise of smart glasses
Smart glasses aren’t a new concept. Google attempted it years ago with Google Glass, but it failed as society wasn’t quite ready for it. However, these days the form factor is seeing a rise in popularity. This is thanks to more affordable alternatives like Snap’s Spectacles and Meta’s Ray-Bans.
So much so that not only is Samsung stepping into the space, but rumor has it that Apple is planning to launch its own pair as well. However, unlike Meta and Samsung, Apple is said to be going at it alone. The company is reportedly designing its own frame. Will smart glasses become the new standard in tech? Only time will tell.
