Samsung seems ready to break out of its recent display routine. After sticking with familiar screen materials over the last few device generations, the Korean tech giant is reportedly preparing a massive display overhaul for its next flagship family, bringing its latest screen tech directly to its own hardware line. According to South Korean outlet ETNews, the higher-end Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will be Samsung’s first smartphones to ship with cutting-edge M16 OLED panels.
Catching up with rivals while adding privacy tech
What makes this upgrade particularly interesting is that Samsung Display was actually supplying its top-tier M16 glass to major competitors first. Devices like Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series and Google’s Pixel 11 adopted M16 panels ahead of Samsung’s own Galaxy lineup.
Putting M16 panels on the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra finally closes that gap. The new material set brings noticeable gains in peak brightness, power efficiency, color accuracy, and overall display lifespan. To sweeten the deal, Samsung is pairing M16 glass with Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology and an integrated Privacy Display feature. That built-in privacy tech electronically blocks side viewing angles, so you can check sensitive info in public without messing with annoying plastic screen protectors.
Tiered display sizes across the entire S27 family
This screen refresh isn’t just limited to the top-tier models either. The base Galaxy S27 and S27+ are also getting their first material upgrade in three years. More specifically, they will move from older M13 material to the M14 OLED glass previously featured on the S26 Ultra.
The reported screen sizes set up a clear structure across the upcoming family. The standard Galaxy S27 features a 6.27-inch panel, while the larger S27+ scales up to 6.66 inches, with both relying on the upgraded M14 glass. Stepping up to the premium tier gets you a 6.47-inch display on the Galaxy S27 Pro, while the top-of-the-line S27 Ultra tops out at 6.89 inches. Both of these upper models get exclusive access to the M16 OLED glass, COE filters, and native privacy tech.
Looking ahead to Samsung’s 2027 roadmap
This coordinated update shows Samsung is deliberately widening the gap between its standard models and its premium phones. Reserving M16 panels and advanced privacy filters for the Pro and Ultra gives buyers a much clearer reason to consider those higher price tags.
Industry reports also indicate that this display upgrade will stretch into Samsung’s foldable lineup later in the year. The Galaxy Z Flip 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9, and Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra are all expected to abandon older M13 glass for M16 panels in late 2027. With all panels supplied directly by Samsung Display and an official launch set for the first quarter of 2027, Galaxy fans finally have a major screen upgrade to look forward to.
