Samsung is already testing Android 17 on one of its cheapest phones. While Galaxy S26 series’ users are busy experimenting with early One UI 9.0 beta builds, tech trackers recently spotted the upcoming software running internally on the budget-friendly Galaxy A16 5G.
Spotting the upgrade early
The new development surfaced directly on Samsung’s internal test servers, carrying firmware version A166BXXU8EZF1. For now, the company is actively optimizing this specific build for the European market, SamMobile reports.
If you own a Galaxy A16 5G, don’t expect an invitation to a public beta program anytime soon. Samsung traditionally reserves experimental testing phases for its expensive flagships. Instead, this entry-level phone will almost certainly take a more direct route, skipping the public beta entirely to receive the fully polished, stable update down the road.
What is coming inside the code?
Instead of introducing a radical visual redesign, One UI 9.0 focuses heavily on making your device run faster and smoother behind the scenes. As the upgrade relies on Google’s new Android 17 architecture, the OS brings new memory use limitations on background apps and mobile games to free up performance. It also introduces a handy app Handoff feature, making it much easier to move tasks across multiple connected devices to improve productivity.
On the visual side, Samsung is adding a few elegant touches. The team implemented a colorful waveform animation for the music player widget inside the notification shade and Quick Panel while also improving the media output screen. The entire user interface will also feature more glassy textures and background blur effects compared to One UI 8.5.
When will it arrive?
The development schedule is moving remarkably fast. Samsung plans to officially debut the stable version of One UI 9.0 alongside its next major hardware generation—specifically the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Still, the budget phones won’t be trailing too far behind.
If the current testing pace keeps up, the Galaxy A16 5G could start receiving the stable over-the-air update before the end of this year.
