Reddit users are getting a new way to engage with each other on the platform with video comments. This new format joins the existing options like text, images, and GIFs in comments. The company believes that videos in comments allow users to convey their point visually instead of relying on descriptions in certain situations.
Reddit wants to make discussions more engaging with video comments
The videos-in-comments feature is only available in public, safe-for-work subreddits that have it enabled. There’s now a new video icon alongside images and GIFs in the comment box on all platforms. Users can either record a clip or upload a video they found online. Reddit notes that videos do not autoplay and that they will respect users’ audio settings. Additionally, it’ll also run video comments through its safety systems before being displayed.
Reddit shares certain examples where this new video in comments format can be helpful. Those include sharing a quick cooking video of a recipe, demonstrating fancy soccer footwork in a thread about sports, or showing off perfect makeup techniques to others.

Videos will not autoplay
This can also be useful during AMA (Ask Me Anything) discussions. There are instances where celebrities sometimes record one video answering several questions. However, thanks to this new option, they can now respond more quickly and directly with questioners during the conversation. The new video format in the comments is available to all Reddit users globally and across all platforms, including apps.Â
Reddit is always working to improve its app-using experience. Earlier this year, the company announced improvements to the search experience using AI focusing on questions that may need multiple human viewpoints instead of one clear answer. In a way, the upgrades will also help Reddit keep users on the platform instead of sending them away to Google or AI platforms.
