AI frame-generation was a big leap forward for NVIDIA and PC gaming, and soon enough it’ll be coming to the PlayStation platform. AI frame-generation is upscaling technology that as the name suggests, generates frames in between frames to smooth out gameplay, allowing the capability to improve the visuals and still retain a decent frame rate.
The tech is pretty divisive on PC, with some swearing off of it entirely while others have embraced its functionality (though it seems considerably less hated than NVIDIA’s DLSS 5). Gaming PCs are quite a bit more powerful than consoles, and if you need better frame rates it’s always possible to upgrade parts, provided they can be paid for. Consoles, however, don’t have this luxury. So it seems likely that AI frame-generation might be a welcomed addition by many who own a PlayStation console.
AI frame-generation is coming to PlayStation “at some point”
The confirmation about this technology being added comes from Sony’s Mark Cerny as part of a recent interview with Digital Foundry. Cerny didn’t specifically say when AI frame-generation could be expected. What he did say was that “I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”
One big question that seems to be present is which platforms Cerny was referring to. It’s reasonable to assume that the PS5 Pro might be one of those platforms. However, Cerny has confirmed that there are no more releases planned for this year when referring to these sorts of large technical updates. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a PS5 Pro feature, but it doesn’t mean it will either. What seems more certain is that whether it comes to PS5 Pro or not, it will likely be on the next-generation PlayStation console, which will be the PS6.
Base PS5 owners might not want to get their hopes on this one. The hardware may not be as equipped to handle it and that’s evident since it already can’t handle some of the stuff the PS5 Pro does.
