The Take A Message feature on Pixel phones is finally getting custom greetings, letting you personalize the message people hear when they call your phone and the Pixel phone picks up the call for you. This probably sounds a lot like the custom greeting you would set up for non-Pixel phones just by dialing your voicemail number and that’s because that’s exactly what it is.
In the grand scheme of things it’s no different. It’s simply a way for you to replace the standard greeting that plays when Take A Message currently answers phone calls. That message is fine, but this will let users customize it with their own voice which is arguably a lot more appealing. For one, people calling you and getting Take A Message instead of you picking up the phone will still end up hearing a familiar voice. The feature should be rolling out today pretty widely. Though not every user is going to see it right away.
Take A Message custom greetings will require a Phone app update
While the feature is rolling out today to users, you will need the latest version of the Phone app for it to populate. Once you’re on the latest version, you should see a pop-up message at the top of the app UI that introduces the new custom greetings feature, and suggesting that you try it out.
If this message isn’t there for you, then you either need to update your app or the app update hasn’t reached your device yet. That should happen sometime today though. It’s also worth noting that this is only available for Pixel owners using a Pixel 6 or later, and only in certain regions right now. Supported regions include the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland.
If you decide to try the feature out per the pop-up banner’s suggestion you’ll be taken right to the screen for recording a custom greeting. If you skip it and come back later, you can find this screen again by tapping the hamburger menu button on the left, then going into settings, tapping on Take A Message, and then finally on the Manage Greetings sub-menu. This is where you can record new greetings and manage the ones that are in there by selecting the default.
