Pixel LEDs are the latest possible hint that Google could be working on a Pixel Glow feature for its upcoming devices. The Pixel 11 series phones are still months away but Google is surely already hard at work on them. These will launch with Android 17 out of the box, or at least they should, and users can expect a few new features in that version of the software.
While most of those features have been popping up in the beta software for users to access, Pixel Glow is one such feature that hasn’t manifested in a usable state. It was however discovered in the recently released Android 17 Beta 4, which is how its existence is even known. According to that information, Pixel Glow is likely to be a feature that uses lights on the back of the phone to alert users of incoming notifications when the phone is face down. That’s the theory. This would be a welcome addition, as LED notification lights were a prized feature several years ago, and a spiritual successor to those is due for a debut.
LEDs referenced in the Pixel Diagnostics app further hint at the Pixel Glow feature
While Pixel Glow isn’t directly referenced in this latest bit of information, it’s the most likely candidate for whatever Google seems to be doing with RGB LEDs. Android Authority has recently discovered mentions of LEDs in some strings of code in the Pixel Diagnostics app. The strings reference color LED checks and a description says that the LED lights will turn into red, green, and blue in order. Another description says that “a lightbulb will change color in the test.”
Those strings don’t exactly confirm the presence of Pixel Glow in Google’s upcoming phones, but, it’s the most reasonable assumption. Also worth noting is that additional strings of code were found that make references to “Gemini Glow” and “Pixel Lights,” so Pixel Glow does seem plausible. Of course, Google hasn’t mentioned anything about this feature. It also likely wouldn’t until it officially announces the Pixel 11 series, since this would probably be exclusive to those phones. It’s also possible that Google could be working on this for a while.
