Samsung announced its new Galaxy A series mid-rangers back in March, while its ultra-budget Galaxy A device arrived in August last year. The Galaxy A57 is the more powerful Galaxy A device that arrived earlier this year, and we’re here to compare it with the company’s ultra-budget offering. In other words, we’ll be comparing the Samsung Galaxy A57 vs Samsung Galaxy A17.
Before we begin, do note that the Galaxy A17 is a notably more affordable phone. They’re not exactly on the same level. With that being said, we’ll first list their specs and will then compare them across a number of other categories, including design, display, performance, battery, cameras, and audio. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Samsung Galaxy A57 vs Samsung Galaxy A17: Design
While the general design language is similar, there are differences between these two phones. Both of them include flat displays. The Galaxy A57 has a centered display camera hole up top, while the Galaxy A17 has a display camera notch instead. The bezels around the Galaxy A57’s display are notably thinner in comparison, and the Galaxy A17 also has that rather noticeable “chin” at the bottom.
Both phones have flat frames, but they’re not exactly the same. The Galaxy A57’s frame is made out of aluminum, while the Galaxy A17’s is made out of plastic. The power/lock button sits on the right side of both phones, along with the volume up and down keys. Both smartphones have flat backplates, but the build materials are different here as well. There’s glass on the back of the Galaxy A57, while the Galaxy A17 utilizes “glass-fiber reinforced plastic.”
Speaking of their backplates, both of them have pill-shaped camera islands on the back. They’re vertical, and each of them includes three cameras, albeit different ones. Both of those camera islands protrude on the back, and the one on the Galaxy A57 is larger. The Galaxy 57 is IP68 certified, while the Galaxy A17 is IP54 certified. The Galaxy A57 is slightly shorter, narrower, and thinner in comparison, even though they have the same display sizes. Thinner bezels on the phone do play a role here. That phone is also a bit lighter.

The Samsung Galaxy A57 has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ display. That display is flat, and it supports a 120Hz refresh rate. HDR10+ content is also supported, while the peak brightness it can offer is 1,900 nits. The screen-to-body ratio is around 89%. The resolution this display offers is 2340 x 1080 pixels, while the display aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The Gorilla Glass Victus+ protects this panel.
The Samsung Galaxy A17, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display. That panel is also flat, while its peak brightness is somewhat lower than what the Galaxy A57 offers. This display offers a 90Hz refresh rate and a 2340 x 1080 resolution. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9. Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus is in charge of protecting this panel.
While both of these displays are generally good, the Galaxy A57’s is better. They’re both vivid and have good viewing angles, while they’re both sharp enough as well. The Galaxy A57’s display does get brighter, and it also has a higher refresh rate. Once you get used to it, you’ll notice the refresh rate difference, at least we do, with ease.

The Samsung Galaxy A57 is fueled by the Exynos 1680 processor. That’s a 4nm chip from Samsung, and it’s a mid-range processor. It is backed by 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, while Samsung also opted to use UFS 3.1 flash storage here. Do note that the storage is not expandable, so choose wisely.
The Samsung Galaxy A17, on the other hand, is fueled by the Exynos 1330 chip. That’s a 5nm processor, and it’s more of an entry-level chip. It is backed by 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM. As far as storage goes, you can choose between 128GB and 256GB of UFS 2.2 flash storage. Do note that the storage is not expandable here either.
Yes, there is a notable performance difference between the two phones. That is especially noticeable when you use them side by side. The Galaxy A57 is a noticeably more fluid phone in comparison. It’s more consistent when it comes to performance. It’s also the device that will perform better when it comes to gaming, even though neither of these two smartphones is made for gaming.
Samsung Galaxy A57 vs Samsung Galaxy A17: Battery
Both of them have the same battery on the inside. Samsung opted for a 5,000mAh battery. As many of you know, the company still does not use silicon-carbon battery tech. While the battery life is not exactly top-notch on either phone, the Galaxy A57 is notably better in that regard. You’ll be able to get over 1 hour of extra screen-on time on the phone, with ease, even far more than that.
The Galaxy A17’s battery life is really nothing to write home about, and it cannot keep step with the Galaxy A57 despite the two phones have the same battery capacity. The Galaxy A57 will be more than enough for most people to get through the day. However, power users may find themselves in need of charging the device before the end of the day. There are phones out there with far better battery life than both of these devices.
The Samsung Galaxy A57 supports 45W wired charging, while wireless charging is not supported. The Galaxy A17 does not support wireless charging either, but it supports 25W wired charging. The Galaxy A57 can be fully charged in about an hour and 10 minutes, while it takes the Galaxy A17 about an hour and 20 minutes to get there. Neither phone comes with a charger, though, so do note you’ll have to get one separately.

There are three cameras located on the back of the Galaxy A57. Samsung opted for a 50-megapixel main snapper with an f/1.8 aperture and a 1/1.56-inch sensor size. That camera supports PDAF and OIS. The second camera is a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit with an f/2.2 aperture and a 1/3.06-inch sensor size. The last camera is a 5-megapixel macro unit with an f/2.4 aperture.
The Samsung Galaxy A17 also has three cameras on the back. It includes a 50-megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a 1/2.76-inch sensor size. OIS is supported here. A 5-megapixel ultrawide camera is also used, with an f/2.2 aperture and a 1/5.0-inch sensor size. The last camera on the back of this phone is a 2-megapixel macro unit.
The Galaxy A57 is a notably better performer across all scenarios. Its main camera offers more details and better dynamic range, and the difference is especially noticeable in low light. The ultrawide camera also performs notably better, and the low-light benefit is even more noticeable, even though that camera is not exactly great in general. The Galaxy A57 also has a better macro camera, but it’s only usable in situations with plenty of natural light. Smartphone OEMs really should stop using separate 2-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras.
Audio
Stereo speakers are included on both of these smartphones. They are actually on the same level and offer basically the same performance. It’s possible that Samsung used identical speakers. They’re loud enough, and the sound output quality is not bad.
There is no audio jack on either phone. You can, however, use their Type-C ports instead if you want. If not, the Galaxy A57 supports Bluetooth 6.0 for wireless connectivity, while the Galaxy A17 comes with Bluetooth 5.3.
