A major mobile photography shakeup might be heading to future smartphones. According to a recent leak, OPPO is planning to ditch Sony image sensors across its upcoming mid-range and flagship devices to rely heavily on Samsung’s 200MP camera sensors.
Moving beyond costs to chase ultra-high resolution
Tech brands often switch component suppliers to save money—especially amid the ongoing memory shortage and skyrocketing component prices. However, this decision goes deeper than simple budgeting. OPPO wants to integrate extremely high-resolution 200MP sensors across multiple price points and physical camera dimensions. Sony’s current LYTIA catalog simply doesn’t offer that level of versatility in 200MP formats. This is reportedly forcing OPPO to turn to Samsung to fill the gap.
According to tipster Tech Home on X (formerly Twitter), OPPO is preparing a full-stack hardware replacement where popular Sony LYT sensors across various sizes are slated to be swapped out for Samsung equivalents. In the mid-range tier, the 1/1.56-inch Sony LYT-700 will give way to the Samsung ISOCELL HP5. Moving up to the sub-flagship level, the 1/1.4-inch Sony LYT-808 is expected to be replaced by the Samsung HPE. In the high-end category, the 1/1.28-inch Sony LYT-828 will make way for the Samsung HPC sensor.
Even top-tier hardware isn’t immune, as Sony’s flagship 1/1.12-inch LYT-901 sensor is also on the chopping block. The exact replacement for this massive component hasn’t been named in the leak. Still, industry watchers strongly suspect OPPO will adopt Samsung’s unannounced HPA sensor.
What this means for future OPPO smartphones
That said, OPPO isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket. The manufacturer is reportedly also exploring partnerships with other component makers to secure additional cost-effective options alongside Samsung. The company hasn’t officially confirmed the alleged hardware migration for its next-generation camera phone setups, so you can take this info with a grain of salt for now.
