OPPO’s next camera flagship could be getting an unexpected chip swap. A new rumor says OPPO is testing a MediaTek-powered version of the Find X10 Ultra instead of Qualcomm. That would be a big change for one of the best camera phones on Android. The past few ‘Ultra’ phones from OPPO have used the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, while the other Find X models used MediaTek Dimensity chips.
The rumor comes from a Weibo tipster, as GSMArena reports. The tipster says OPPO is testing a Find X10 Ultra running MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro, along with customized imaging algorithms. Those tweaks are likely meant for OPPO’s Lumo True Image Engine, which handles its camera processing.
That would be a surprise. The Find X9 Ultra launched in April with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, so most people expected the Find X10 Ultra to stick with Qualcomm.
Don’t count Qualcomm out just yet
There’s a twist, though. In replies to his own post, the tipster said OPPO is also testing a Snapdragon version of the Find X10 Ultra, likely with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. He says OPPO hasn’t made a final decision yet. In fact, he believes the Snapdragon version is the one most likely to win out.
If OPPO does go with MediaTek, the Find X10 Ultra would share its chip with the Find X10 Pro Max, and the cameras would be the main difference between the two. That’s not a bad thing, since cameras are the whole point of OPPO’s Ultra phones.
The Find X10 Ultra is shaping up to be a camera monster. It’s rumored to pack a 200MP main camera with a massive 1/1.12-inch sensor and LOFIC technology for better dynamic range. It also reportedly gets a 200MP periscope telephoto, a 50MP periscope with 10x optical zoom, and a 100MP selfie camera with a square sensor.
This rumor is interesting given what’s going on with Qualcomm’s latest chip. Reports of overheating concerns with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 have surfaced, and Samsung is reportedly weighing whether to use its own Exynos 2700 in more Galaxy S27 models. If OPPO is hedging its bets with MediaTek too, it could signal that phone makers are looking for alternatives.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing OPPO go with MediaTek. Dimensity chips have closed the gap with Snapdragon over the past few years, and OPPO already tunes its camera software heavily. What matters most on a phone like this is image processing, and that’s where OPPO’s custom algorithms come in. Either way, it’s still early, so expect plans to change before launch.
