OpenAI’s rumored move into smartphones is starting to look less like a side project. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI may now be aiming to begin mass production of its first AI agent phone in the first half of 2027. If true, this would be earlier than previous estimates.
OpenAI could launch its first AI agentic phone in 2027
According to reports, OpenAI will use a smartphone form factor, but a different operating philosophy. The phone is expected to focus on agent-style interactions, where users ask for tasks to be completed instead of moving through a familiar grid of apps. This way, the experience would be based on context-aware assistance, with AI handling more of the interface in the background.
Kuo’s report also points to powerful hardware inside. MediaTek could be the chipset provider, with a custom version of the Dimensity 9600 under discussion. This would be a chip manufactured in TSMC’s N2P process and designed with AI workloads in mind. To do this, it would integrate a dual-NPU setup and an upgraded image signal processor for better visual sensing.
That camera-focused hardware matters because the phone seems designed to interpret the world around it. OpenAI’s “agent AI phone” could also feature LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage, as well as security tools like pKVM and inline hashing. This suggests a device focused on local processing.
Another move ahead of a potential IPO
Business-wise, Kuo believes the faster timeline may reflect OpenAI’s need to support an IPO narrative. The company also needs to move quickly in a market that could soon attract more “AI agent” devices. He also estimates that shipments across 2027 and 2028 could reach around 30 million units if development stays on track.
OpenAI has not confirmed the phone itself, but the reports fit into a broader hardware push. Other rumored products include a smart speaker with a camera, along with glasses, a lamp, and possibly earbuds. Many of these devices navigate the parentship between OpenAI’s and Jony Ive’s team.
