OpenAI recently rolled out a handful of quiet updates to ChatGPT, its AI-powered assistant, across both mobile and web platforms, introducing hidden gestures, streamlined navigation, and a noticeable adjustment to how the default system communicates with users.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT app gets new gestures to adjust brainpower on the fly
The most interesting addition is a hidden shortcut for the mobile app. Instead of forcing users to dig through standard settings menus to change models, OpenAI introduced a long-press gesture on the familiar send arrow icon. Pressing and holding this button instantly opens a prompt intelligence level picker.
This selector essentially lets you dictate exactly how much processing effort and reasoning power the AI should spend on your request before generating a reply. Depending on your specific OpenAI subscription tier, you can choose between three distinct settings: Instant, Thinking, and Extended. If a quick, standard response falls flat, switching to a higher reasoning mode gives the app a chance to tackle the problem with deeper analysis.
Mapping out massive conversations
Meanwhile, desktop users are getting a highly requested quality-of-life improvement designed to eliminate endless scrolling. The web application now features an automatic table of contents for any conversation that reaches five or more responses.
The system analyzes the topics discussed throughout the thread and automatically builds distinct, jumpable sections. A subtle menu icon appears on the middle right section of the screen; hovering over these lines expands the index, allowing you to quickly jump to a specific topic. This feature remains exclusive to the web version for now. Still, it provides a massive productivity boost for power users managing long project logs.
A more natural default voice
Beyond interface tweaks, the overall tone of your daily chats is shifting. The tech giant implemented a series of backend adjustments to its default GPT-5.5 Instant model. Since its initial arrival, the model aimed to deliver smarter answers with fewer emojis. The latest style tweak takes those improvements a step further.
According to official developer updates, the system now prioritizes a much cleaner layout. By default, the model is designed to offer useful help without bombarding users with overly long blocks of text or formatting heavy in bullet points. The goal is to make daily interactions much more natural, better paced, and easy to skim.
