
Amazon and Anthropic made headlines recently by saying they want to reach 6GW of AI computing capacity by the end of this year. However, the parent company of the popular AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT wants to go much further. OpenAI recently announced a goal of 30GW AI compute power by 2030.

To put this in perspective, starting 2025, OpenAI was operating on roughly 1.9GW of capacity. Early that year, the company committed to a 10GW benchmark. As of today, over 8GW of that infrastructure has already been identified. Shifting from that baseline to a 30GW goal by the end of the decade represents a massive acceleration.
The infrastructure challenge
Reaching 30GW of AI power is not as simple as buying more servers. To reach this level of growth, the global semiconductor industry and energy infrastructure will likely need a revamp. We are talking about a project that will likely demand new dedicated power plants, massive factory expansions, and a complete reimagining of how data centers operate.
Recent patents from OpenAI suggest the company is already working on custom AI chips. Their design reportedly features more High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) than anything currently available on the market. However, the tech industry is already struggling with HBM shortages. This has made big suppliers like Samsung and SK Hynix rush to build new facilities.
The potential consumer ripple effect
While this “compute gold rush” is a victory for AI development, it presents a complex situation for the average consumer. The resources that OpenAI needs to sustain its 30GW goal will put big pressure on the global supply chain.
The current AI boom has already caused notable price hikes in smartphones, PCs, and gaming consoles. So, maintaining affordable pricing for everyday electronics could get even more complicated.
